Lacks surround effects
A Sony X85J is not the best TV to enjoy surround effects. The X85J’s letterbox bars are too dense and don’t show as much blooming as those from Hisense and TCL. These two televisions exhibited the most consistent contrast, but they lack surround effects. Sony’s letterbox bars also showed less stray illumination. The Sony X85J’s lack of surround effects should not be a deal-breaker.
The color accuracy on the Sony X85J is generally decent, but there’s a slight bluish tinge. For instance, the colour palette of the Battle of the Five Armies is rather muted until Bilbo arrives at his home. However, the Sony X85J was able to deliver the brilliant greens of Shire hill and vivid blues of the sky. The X85J’s colors weren’t blown out, but they were sufficiently rich and vivid. However, viewing angles could be improved.
Although the Sony X85J is not as powerful as the X90J, it still has many vital specifications, and is a good choice for those who don’t need surround effects. It comes with HDMI 2.1 support for two devices, a 4K 120Hz display, Dolby Vision HDR, and a Triluminos panel. Its colours and brightness are strong, and the smart TV software runs on Google.
The Sony X90J has a better picture than the X900H, which I reviewed last year. Although it wasn’t quite as good as the TCL, it came close. The Sony X90J also has good black level fidelity from off-angle, and there’s less blooming than the Hisense. While its picture quality doesn’t match the TCL, the X90J is still a great TV for gaming and watching movies.

Lacks Dolby Audio
